Frequently Asked Questions about Sportfasting

Question: What makes sportfasting different compared to the ‘Sonja Bakker diet’?

Answer: The Sonja Bakker diet is a low calory diet, which puts your body in the ‘starvation mode’. No metabolic switch will occur and your body will keep on burning sugar instead of fat. One of the consequences is that after the diet and for the rest of your life you will have to stick to consuming less calories. If you don’t, you will regain the weight you just lost, and probably more. Scientific research has shown that only people who have done exercising in combination with the Sonja Bakker diet, were able to keep the kilos off.

Question: Will exercising only make me lose just as much weight as the sportfasting programme?

Answer: Sportfasting creates a far bigger training stimulus, which helps the body make the metabolic switch from burning sugar to burning fat. Once the fat burning mode is achieved, the amount of fat that is burnt during training is higher and you will lose more weight while making the same effort.

Question: During the fasting days, I am hardly allowed to eat anything, won’t I get hungry?

Answer: No, sensations of being hungry are being suppressed by nutritional supplements, which are especially designed for the sportfasting programme.

Question: My friend did the sportfasting programme. Now I would like to do the same, without a sportfasting coach and food supplements. Is that possible?

Answer: It is not very sensible to do the sportfasting programme without a coach. The sportfasting protocol is determined based on a personal test before the programme and adjusted where needed based on the results of urine tests during the programme. Without these tests and without coaching you could end up in the ‘starvation mode’ and no metabolic switch will occur. The food supplements help create the metabolic switch, burn fat, they suppress your appetite and they prevent proteins (including muscles) from breaking down.

Question: I would like to do the sportfasting programme with 6 fasting days instead of 3. Is that possible?

Answer: If you fast for more than 3 days you will risk ending up in the ‘starvation mode’ and vital proteins in the muscles, liver and organs could start decomposing. 3 Days of fasting is enough.

Question: Next week I will be working every day but I still want to do the sportfasting programme. Is that possible?

Answer: After doing one sportfasting programme, your body is trained to do sportfasting and for the next sportfasting programmes working will not be a problem. For most people however, the first time is such a new experience and there is no energy left to go to work. Besides that, stress at work could prevent the metabolic switch from occuring.

Question: I am against the consumption of nutritional supplements. Is it possible to do the sportfasting programme without them.

Answer: No, when you do the sportfasting programme without the specific sportfasting supplements, you are undermining your health.

Question: My therapist is not a certified sportfasting coach but he says he is capable of coaching me and of providing me with the right supplements. Is it sensible to have him coach me during the programme?

Answer: The specific sportfasting supplements are only provided to certified sportfasting coaches. Both the education as well as the nutritional supplements are based on years of evolvement. It is not sensible to do the sportfasting programme with uncertified coaches who haven´t got the know-how and the proper supplements. Only the coaches mentioned on this website are officially certified.
